In the early 90s, Candiru was formed as an industrial/death metal hybrid act, and they laid down a few tracks in 1991, releasing an EP called “Piscatorial Terror”. D-Trash Records have taken these early recordings, added some live tracks from a 1993 bootleg, and re-released it as a full-length album.
Even though it’s sort of fun to listen to, in a high school rebellion sort of way, one has to question the wisdom behind afflicting the public in general with further offerings from an act that has, up until this point, hardly created a stir within either the industrial or death metal scenes, despite a number of split and solo releases over the years. The music is raw, edgy and unpolished, but without any of the flair associated with contemporary bands (like the legendary Skinny Puppy, Coil or Godflesh) that were also putting out technical, powerful live music on analog equipment. This makes Candiru more of an industrial band that never quite made it out of the garage, let alone down the driveway and into the annals of musical history.
On a positive note, the sound quality on the live recording is surprisingly good for a bootleg. The best track on the record is the instrumental intro, “The Coming of Grief”, which stands head and shoulders above the rest in terms of production quality and musical content. Otherwise, this album is nothing more than a fairly useless piece of early 90s nostalgia, like the original rollerblades or those annoying neon-coloured slap-on bracelet things.
